Decks and Balcony Membrane

Are you looking to extend the life of your decks and balconies while also enhancing their overall appearance? Look no further than our membrane decking service!

Decks and Balcony Membrane

Decks and balconies are often fully exposed to the harsh outdoor elements, leading to wear and tear, water damage, and structural issues over time. By adding on a membrane, you can protect your deck or balcony from the elements while also improving its overall aesthetic.

Our team of expert technicians will work closely with you to assess your specific needs and recommend the best membrane solution for your project. Whether you're looking to repair an existing deck or balcony or install a new one from scratch, we have the knowledge and expertise to get the job done right.

Your options

Sheet or liquid membrane?

Sheet membranes

We offer a wide range of sheet and liquid deck membranes to suit your specific needs. Our sheet membranes are made from durable and flexible materials that provide long-lasting protection against water and weathering, ensuring your deck or balcony stays in top condition for years to come.

Butynol is appraised by BRANZ for decks as well as roofs, and we also lay TPO and vinyl deck membranes, from Ardex 615 TPO at Bowentown to Sealco Dekmaster vinyl at Waihi Beach.

Liquid membranes

For those looking for a more flexible and customizable solution, our liquid deck membranes offer a seamless and fully adhered option that conforms to any deck or balcony shape or size. These membranes also come in a variety of colors and textures, allowing you to customize the look of your outdoor space to your exact specifications.

A liquid membrane can also renew a tired deck surface that is still sound underneath, as the before and after photographs further down this page show.

What makes a deck membrane last

A deck membrane is usually the only layer between the weather and the room or framing below, so the details decide how long it lasts: enough fall for water to drain, upturns taken high enough at walls and doors, outlets and overflows big enough and kept clear, and a structure stiff enough not to flex. BRANZ Bulletin 583 lists insufficient membrane upturn, undersized outlets, missing overflows and decks that deflect among the common problems it sees, and advises inspecting a membrane deck every year because there is no second line of defence.

When we look at an existing deck or balcony we check those same points before recommending a repair or a new membrane. If water has been getting into the framing, BRANZ recommends the deck structure is inspected by a building surveyor before it is covered again, and we will tell you when we think that is needed. If you are not sure where the water is coming from, start with a leak inspection.

How a deck or balcony job runs

  1. Free on-site inspection and quote

We look at the deck or balcony, what is under it, how it drains and where it meets the walls, doors and balustrade. If water is already getting into the room below, we start with a leak inspection. Then you get a free quote that says exactly what work is required.

  2. Choose the membrane and finish

We talk through sheet and liquid membranes, colours and textures, and recommend the one that suits how you use the space and your budget.

  3. Measure, apply and seal

Our trained team lays and seals the membrane on a new deck or over a prepared existing one, working to the time and budget agreed. The same crews lay membrane roofs, so a deck over a living area is handled as the roof it is.

  4. Finished and guaranteed

We stand behind our workmanship with a warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a deck membrane last?

That depends on the membrane, the fall and how hard the deck is used. BRANZ expects Butynol systems to last at least 20 years in normal conditions with proper maintenance. Whatever the membrane, check it every year for damage, keep outlets clear, and protect it from sharp objects and heavy point loads.

Can you put a membrane over my existing deck?

Often, yes. We repair existing decks and balconies as well as waterproofing new ones. A liquid membrane can go over a sound, prepared surface, as in the before and after photographs on this page. If the deck or the framing under it has failed, we will say so and quote what is needed.

What colours and finishes are there?

Liquid deck membranes come in a variety of colours and textures, and sheet membranes come in a smaller range. Our jobs include black Butynol, grey and white TPO and a speckled vinyl finish. We bring samples of the options that suit your deck.

Do you waterproof balconies and ramps as well as decks?

Yes. We waterproof balconies over living areas, long walkways and access ramps, including a wheelchair access ramp in Te Puke finished in black Butynol.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Tauranga and have waterproofed decks and balconies in Papamoa, Omokoroa, Te Puna, Bowentown and Waihi Beach, across the wider Bay of Plenty. Call 027 259 9012 for a free on-site quote.
