Sheet and liquid membranes, and the brands we use

Most waterproofing membranes are either sheets or liquids. Sheets such as Butynol (a synthetic rubber made in New Zealand by ARDEX), TPO and vinyl come in rolls and are laid and joined on site. Liquid membranes are applied on site and cure into a seamless, fully adhered layer that follows curves, plant stands and penetrations. Which suits depends on the surface, how it is used and your budget, and we will explain the choice.

On recent jobs we have used WPS Durotuff TPO from Waterproofing Systems, Ardex 615 TPO and Butynol from Ardex, Sealco's Dekmaster vinyl and TPO, and liquid membrane systems, as well as products from Allco and Nuralite. Whatever the membrane, the goal is the one set by clause E2 of the Building Code: buildings must provide adequate resistance to penetration by, and the accumulation of, moisture from the outside.

The work is done by a qualified team. Les Hepworth, who owns Alpha, is a Licensed Building Practitioner (BP104443) with a Roofing licence covering membrane, torch-on and liquid membrane roofs, the team holds national certificates in membrane roofing and waterproofing, and Alpha is Totika accredited.

Frequently asked questions

What can you waterproof?

Roofs, decks, balconies and ramps, basements, internal box gutters and water features, plus leak repairs and joint sealing. Each has its own page: membrane roofs, decks and balconies and basement tanking.

Should I use a sheet or a liquid membrane?

Sheets suit large, simple areas and long service lives; liquids suit awkward shapes, lots of penetrations and recoating a sound existing membrane. We recommend one after looking at the job.

Are you licensed and qualified?
